Our common goal is to reach out to the world around us with Christ's Love, led by the Spirit, praying diligently, serving effectively, and proclaiming His Mercy, Power and Grace. Matt 28:18-20; Jesus said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to put into practice everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." The Burt Presbyterian Church encourages its members and friends to live a life of faithfulness in response to God's amazing grace. We are a church family who loves God and one another. We are called to be a House of Prayer and Love, a lighthouse of God's promises for the lost, the hurting, the sick and the weary. We seek to extend the Lord's love and compassion to our community. God calls us to faithfulness. Our mission is to offer Christ's love and teachings to others in church, at home and in the community. Pastor Glenn and his wife, Deacon Diane Wilson, are working with the Session of the Burt Presbyterian Church to carry out the purposes that Christ gave us in the Great Commandments (Mark 12:28-31) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20). We seek to love God with all that we have, and to love our neighbors as ourselves, while proclaiming the Good News for all to know about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We seek to be God's faithful ambassadors. We preach the Gospel message of God's love, power and salvation every Sunday. We believe that the Bible is our written source of God's truth. It is the great wisdom of the ages and it is God's authoritative Word for our lives. We hope that our church is a lighthouse of love for our area. "In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth praying, 'Come, Lord Jesus.'" -From A Brief Statement of Faith Presbuteros, the Greek word meaning elder, is used seventy-two times in the New Testament. It provided the name for the Presbyterian family of churches, which includes the Reformed churches of the world. Both Presbyterian and Reformed are synonymous with churches of the Calvinist tradition. Some of the principles articulated by the Reformed theologian John Calvin remain at the core of Presbyterian beliefs. Among these are the sovereignty of God, the authority of the scripture, justification by grace through faith and the priesthood of all believers. What they mean is that God is the supreme authority throughout the universe. Our knowledge of God and God's purpose for humanity comes from the Bible, particularly what is revealed in the New Testament through the life of Jesus Christ. Our salvation (justification) through Jesus is God's generous gift to us and not the result of our own accomplishments. It is everyone's job - ministers and lay people alike - to share this Good News with the whole world. That is also why the Presbyterian church is governed at all levels by a combination of clergy and laity, men and women alike. Our church seeks to fulfill the historic great ends of the church, first adopted in 1910, which are: (1) the proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind; (2) the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God; (3) the maintenance of divine worship; the preservation of the truth; (4) the promotion of social righteousness; and (5) the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world. In its confessions, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) expresses the faith of the Reformed tradition. Central to this tradition is the affirmation of the majesty, holiness, and providence of God who creates, sustains, rules, and redeems the world in the freedom of sovereign righteousness and love. Related to this central affirmation of God's sovereignty are other great themes of the Reformed tradition: 1) The election of the people of God for service as well as for salvation; (2) Covenant life marked by a disciplined concern for order in the church according to the Word of God; (3) A faithful stewardship that shuns ostentation and seeks proper use of the gifts of God's creation; (4) The recognition of the human tendency to idolatry and tyranny, which calls the people of God to work for the transformation of society by seeking justice and living in obedience to the Word of God. A people of God, called together by our faith in Jesus Christ as part of the whole body of Christ to worship, study and serve.
A Session of six elders provides leadership for the church. The congregation is also served by a Board of deacons.
Mission work is the action we are called to do as a church community in gratitude to God's goodness to us. We are involved in local mission projects through our outreach ministries of our congregation and in the work of our Mission Commission, which also helps support regional and national ministries and outreaches in behalf of our congregation. We are also involved in national and worldwide mission with the other Presbyterian Church USA congregations across the nation. We help support more than 600 mission co-workers in more than 80 countries.
